The Veil
What has been a highly contentious topic for decades is for a lot of Muslim women, a normal aspect of their daily lives. The veil (hijab) is a religious duty that is intended for all Muslim women to fulfil as a means of maintaining modesty and fulfilling a commandment of God. Contrary to popular opinion, it is neither oppressive nor does it hinder the lives of its wearers. It is a form of empowerment as women in Islam are judged on their intellect and personal qualities rather than their appearance. It is more than just a covering of one's head- it is about taking control of one's own body.
Those who choose to wear it do so out of personal conviction and a sincere desire to follow their Islamic duties. In a time where the hijab is frowned upon, mocked and derided, it takes courage and an inestimable amount of inner strength to continue wearing it.
The Veil & Green Scarf Day
The widows living their day to day lives, unsure of what the future holds, possess a strong will to carry on and continue despite their difficulties. Green Scarf Day attempts to emulate the courage and strength of these women as they endure their daily hardships. Since Green Scarf Day was initially established within a Muslim student organisation, the veil was held as a symbol of this inner strength and hence the reason the project was named Green Scarf Day.
So Why The Colour Green?
Green has historically been the colour of peace and tranquillity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) loved the colour green as it represented nature and the peace inherent within it. It is this peace of mind that widows living in abject conditions require, to continue life and gain the security and stability that will give them a positive outlook on the future.
In combining the colour green and the veil, we are showing our support and unity with this forgotten part of society. By wearing green on the day, regardless of your creed or religion, you are calling for greater recognition of the contribution of women to society and the satisfaction that comes from providing impoverished people with their needs.
